The Pantridge defibrillator, a portable defibrillator, was invented by British inventor Helen O'Brien . Born in Belfast, Ireland, she received a university education and was married in 1945, but died in a car accident at the age of 26.
Although this was the first defibrillator in the world, in the UK it was only used on horses. Two doctors, spurred by O'Brien's courage, took their own car to her house to collect the battery pack and she was taken to hospital. O'Brien was then taken to the Great Western Hospital in Swindon, Wiltshire, where she was given the first defibrillator. The first human to be treated with it was a 31-year-old man who had been brought into the hospital on a stretcher after being found unconscious on a railway line. The device was so successful that it was used for the first time on a human the same day, and throughout the 1960s it became established as a standard part of the UK ambulance service. O'Brien never returned to the hospital and died in the car crash in which she was fatally injured.
