Not, in my opinion, one of Woody Allen's best, being not quite as endlessly quotable as Annie Hall, as heart-breakingly truthful as Husbands and Wives, as relateable as Hannah and Her Sisters, as visually beautiful as Manhattan or as ground-breaking as Zelig. But it is tremendously entertaining, very easy to like and is one of Allen's most accessible along with Sleeper and The Purple Rose of Cairo(also great films, especially the latter which is another one of Allen's best). Sure it has some uneven spots, the story does play second fiddle to the gags and does feel rushed with the odd occasion when Allen seemed to be losing control of his material somewhat; the ending personally did fall flat and there are too many copy and paste close-up shots which did have a dizzying effect. For its unevenness though, Bananas still works really well and is a case of being flawed but with the pros outweighing the cons by some considerable distance. The score is very catchy with the odd witty touch and is very fitting, Allen's directing is very competently done though with the understandable- seeing as Bananas was only his third film- sense that he was still properly finding his own voice and he does give a great performance too(one of his funniest actually), here he shows that he is completely at home in comedy without being too self-indulgent regardless of his intentionally neurotic character. The acting generally in Bananas is fine and there is good rapport between everyone with the chemistry between Allen and Louise Lasser quite sweet, though only Allen really stands out. But it is in the dialogue and sight gags that makes Bananas as fun as it is. The dialogue is deliciously biting and smart(though a few parts may not sit well with some today), with the best of the one-liners are unforgettably quotable. And the sight gags and slapstick are easily some of the funniest of any Woody Allen film, the best of which being the subway train, magazine and especially trial scenes. Loved the homages to Ingmar Bergman, Charlie Chaplin and Luis Bunuel too and the title, deriving from banana republics and the Marx Brothers' The Cocoanuts, is equally inspired. All in all, recommended highly, not a masterpiece but with a huge amount to enjoy. 8/10 Bethany Cox
This movie is a lot like Allen's prior film, TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN, in that there are so many hilarious moments as well as very flat and unfunny ones. Some of the best moments included the harp player in the closet, his going to the take-out restaurant to get money for the guerrilla army and his going to dinner with el Presidente (and so he brings some danishes). It's raw and silly and lots of fun! The flat moments are many, such as the Howard Cosell ending to the film and most of the time he's acting with Louise Lasser. But, I'd rather see a film like this that lacks polish than many of his later, more refined, films. That's because unrefined or not, I laughed myself silly several times during the film.SNAKE BITE!!!
Super adorable, creepy and disturbing fun! Unexpected how gory it is; I really like that! Poorly acted, but beautiful set design and entertaining. A lot of people didn't like The Banana Splits movie but I love it although I never saw the original show something like this is endearing morbid greatness, at least to me.
I love Herbie - it's hard not to. However I can recognise how the four movies gradually get worse. This was the worst one. Now I'm not saying it was terrible, and I don't agree with a comment above that says \"make the kids watch something else\", but it was a disappointing effort. The Love Bug is by far the best, closely followed by Herbie Rides Again. Herbie Goes To Monte Carlo is OK, but Bananas is not very good at all. If you're not a fan of Herbie movies, you won't like this.5/10
When you have Harvey Korman and Cloris Leachman and can't get laughs, that's quite a problem. These two Veterans of Mel Brooks films were two of the funniest character comics the movies has ever known, and in the fourth \"Love Bug/Herbie\" film, they lack the type of writing that they needed to really stand out and create the type of eccentric characters that they've become known for. Herbie has been passed on to the nephew of Dean Jones' character, Stephen W. Burns, and along with Charles Martin Smith, arrives in Puerto Vallarta to claim it. They end up on a cruise ship to Rio De Janeiro where Burns begins to court Leachman's niece, the bland Elyssa Davalos. Joaquin Garay III is a sweet scene stealing pickpocket who stows away on board, befriending Herbie and creating all sorts of mayhem. It's a lavish looking production, but that doesn't make it's funny or memorable. Korman, as the ship's captain, does his typical Carol Burnett Show schtick, but at least they had good writing there. Leachman does have one funny moment when she try to use her female allure to present Hernia from being tossed overboard, while Garay tries to get sympathy for his little thief by having tears when that occurs. His calling Herbie 'Ocho\" is cute however, but aren't most ethnic kids adorable on screen even if they are picking pocketsJohn Vernon, best known as the dean from \"Animal House\", play another one of his deliciously pompous authority figures, while Richard Jaeckel is wasted as his right-hand man. There are a lot of familiar character performers here including Fritz Feld and Vito Scotti, but everybody is pretty much over shadowed by the location footage which includes a trip through the Panama Canal, something that Herbie gets to do after he's given the big old toss. An attempt for a hit song fails big time with the tune completely cloying and instantly forgettable. So while there are a few funny and cute moments, the film becomes cumbersome after a while, it begins outwearing its welcome long before they get to the bull fight finale that's just oh so precious.

A minion named Larry finds a banana in his box and attempts to eat it, but his one-eyed co-worker named Darwin notices it and wants him to share it with him, but they fight for the banana after Larry refuses to share. Steve tells them to stop fighting but joins the fight when he sees the banana.
They fight and enter a rocket factory, and the banana's carried away by a trapping claw. The inspector minion releases the banana but accidentally releases the rockets also. The three minions together with the banana escape while the rockets explode behind them.
They then fight again to a canteen where they are joined and chased by numerous minions. During the fight, the banana is squished out of its peel and falls into a hole, much to the minions' disappointment. Lance appears with an apple, and the chase begins all over again.
Everybody was well rested after our strenous [sic] trip and enjoyed today as a day of rest. We played bridge, Matt, Leroux, and I most of the afternoon. The river was rising some and continued to rise when it rained heavily during the afternoon and evening. Dick prepared some fried bananas and they were delicious. We started estimating when the mail would be here and some were of the opinion it would be on the next transport which is due to arrive Thursday or Friday. It can [sic] be but because we are so anxious to get it[,] the next transport after the coming one will probably have it. It was cloudy both morning and evening so we did not see the high mountains.
The water had risen considerably during the night and it was just under our floors. We had much reading to do and got off a letter to Dr. Wetmore of the Smithsonian and sent a copy as well as a short letter to Hoover. As the water was everyplace in camp we had to stay in our house and most of the day was spent in the clambos reading the letters, newspapers and magazines. We sure were way behind the times for much had happened in the world since we last heard of it three months or more ago. We splashed around in the water up to our knees and higher in spots and got some good pictures of the camp under water, both movies and stills. Despite the high water we are not suffering any discomforts from it so far. It was funny to see Van Leeuven go around in the rain wading way over his knees in water and with an umbrella over him. To make the picture more humerous [sic] he fell in while going to the bath house and was soaking {F3.17} wet all over. Despite this he held the umbrella over him drowned as he was. I had a short discussion with both Van Leeuven and leRoux in front of the house in the early morning and told them what I thot of those who had sullied or tried to sully our reputation by giving the papers the dope that it was a film expedition and said that whoever it was that sent that information out from Albatros camp would have to answer to it when we came back. Leroux then came back with the statement that Dick himself had said he represented Paramount and I told him it was a darn lie and whoever said he did was a liar of the worst type. I also pointed out that if the movies wanted to get pictures here they would not tie up with a scientific expedition to do it for they could make better and more interesting backgrounds in their own studios in California and said that if anybody knew anything about the moving pictures industry at all they would know that. Posthumus sat across in his house and heard the whole conversation and kept his eyes on the floor when I said someone in Albatros camp had willfully given that information out and with a purpose. But we got over our anger for we are determined to make this expedition a success no matter what they do and say and swallowed hard. Matt said nothing at all except that he was displeased with the entire affair and that they surely knew before to Java that the scientific standing of the expedition was guaranteed by the State Department and the Smithsonian Institution. The day sped by and found us eagerly reading the papers and magazines, well into the evening. The river continued to rise for it rained heavily. We could see more rain in the mountains. 153554b96e
